Population

The Jackson Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) population 1/ increased from 143,274 in 1970 to 160,248 in 2010. That was an increase of 11.8 percent.

The foreign-born (FB) population decreased from 2,897 in 1970 to 2,833 in 2010. That was a decrease of 2.2 percent. The foreign-born share changed from 2.0 percent to 1.8 percent.

The share of the overall population that was native-born (NB) increased by 12.1 percent.

Sources of Population Change

The primary sources of population change are:

The first chart below shows the three population change factors for three periods adjusted for annual average amounts. In it, natural change (B-D) was the primary factor in adding population in all periods.

The second chart shows the same data but with an adjustment to reflect births to immigrants shifted to NIM. In it, B-D remained the principal factor in adding population in all periods, although it was nearly equalled by NIM.
